Over the past five years, incidents of violence against health care workers have skyrocketed, as incivility and violent acts in our society spill into hospitals. Violence in health care has implications far beyond the injuries sustained by its workforce. Workplace violence creates a difficult environment for nurses to care for patients. Health care workers cannot provide attentive care when they are afraid for their personal safety, distracted by disruptive patients or family members, or traumatized from prior attacks.

Protecting our health care workers must be a national priority. Hospitals and health systems have bolstered security measures, training programs and policies to ensure the safety of health care workers and patients. According to a new American Hospital Association report, prepared by the University of Washington Harborview Injury and Prevention Research Center, the financial cost of violence to hospitals in 2023 was estimated at $18.27 billion. These costs include health care treatment for victims, security staffing for health care facilities and violence prevention programs/training, among other costs. Despite prevention efforts, health care and social service workers are five times more likely than any other type of worker to be physically attacked on the job, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. No one should have to fear for their safety while at work, especially when their job is saving lives and caring for patients.

Despite the proliferation of workplace violence and its effect on our health care system, health care workers do not experience the same federal protections as aircraft and airport workers. Passage of the Save Healthcare Workers Act would serve as a significant deterrent to violence in hospitals and a crucial step in protecting health care workers' safety.

ҹɫ Position

ҹɫ advocates for the Save Healthcare Workers Act (S.1600/H.R.3178) to provide federal protection for health care workers against violence and intimidation.

Key Resources

Save Health Care Workers Act Information Sheet (PDF)

Letter to Representatives Supporting the Save Health Care Workers Act (PDF)

Workplace Violence Prevention Resources

Workplace Safety Advocacy & Public Policy
-->

Sun, 11 Jan 2026 17:59:43 -0600 Advocacy & Public Policy Advocacy Issues /advocacy-issues .jumbotron { background: linear-gradient(135deg, #003087 0%, #0052a3 100%); padding: 4em 2em; margin-bottom: 3em; } .container { max-width: 1200px; margin: 0 auto; padding: 0 1em; } h1 { color: white; font-size: 2.5em; font-weight: 700; margin-bottom: 1em; } .field_lead { background: white; padding: 1.5em; border-radius: 8px; margin-bottom: 3em; box-shadow: 0 2px 8px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.08); } .field_lead p { color: #4a5568; font-size: .7em; line-height: 1.7; } .cta-image-header-link-items { display: grid; grid-template-columns: repeat(auto-fill, minmax(320px, 1fr)); gap: 1.5em; padding: 0 0 3em 0; } .cta-image-header-link-item { text-decoration: none; display: block; /* background: white; */ background: transparent; border-radius: 8px; overflow: hidden; /* box-shadow: 0 2px 12px rgba(0,0,0,0.08); */ text-decoration: none !important; transition: all 0.3s ease; } .cta-image-header-link-item:hover { transform: translateY(-5px); /* box-shadow: 0 8px 24px rgba(0,0,0,0.15); */ } .cta-image-header-link-image { height: 200px; overflow: hidden; position: relative; background: linear-gradient(135deg, #2563eb 0%, #1e40af 100%); display: flex; align-items: center; justify-content: center; } .cta-image-header-link-item:nth-child(1) .cta-image-header-link-image { background: linear-gradient(135deg, #d53369 0%, #daae51 100%); } .cta-image-header-link-item:nth-child(2) .cta-image-header-link-image { background: linear-gradient(135deg, #4568dc 0%, #b06ab3 100%); } .cta-image-header-link-item:nth-child(3) .cta-image-header-link-image { background: linear-gradient(135deg, #0cebeb 0%, #20e3b2 0%, #29ffc6 100%); } .cta-image-header-link-image img { width: 100%; height: 100%; object-fit: cover; transition: transform 0.4s ease; } .cta-image-header-link-item:hover .cta-image-header-link-image img { transform: scale(1.08); } .placeholder-icon { font-size: 2em; line-height: 1.2em; color: white; opacity: 0.9; } em { /* padding: 1.5em; */ padding: 0; } .cta-image-header-link-link-title { font-size: 1.1em; font-weight: 600; color: #2d3748; border-top: 3px solid #e2e8f0; padding-top: 1em; margin-bottom: 0.75em; transition: all 0.3s ease; padding: 1.5em; } .cta-image-header-link-item:hover .cta-image-header-link-link-title { color: #2563eb; border-top-color: #2563eb; } .cta-description { font-size: 0.95em; color: #718096; line-height: 1.6; } /* .field_topics { padding: 2em 0; text-align: center; } */ /* .topic { display: inline-block; background: #e0e7ff; color: #3730a3; padding: 0.5em 1.5em; border-radius: 20px; text-decoration: none; font-weight: 600; font-size: 0.95em; transition: all 0.3s ease; } .topic:hover { background: #3730a3; color: white; } */ @media (max-width: 768px) { .jumbotron { padding: 3em 1.5em; } h1 { font-size: 2em; } .cta-image-header-link-items { grid-template-columns: 1fr; gap: 1.25em; } }

Advocacy Issues

ҹɫ is actively engaged on a range of evolving issues that affect nurse leaders, the nursing workforce, and the patients and communities they serve.
